COUPLES COUNSELLING

Any human relationship can be challenging, but often especially so with our romantic partner where so many layers of complexity meet and can interact in unconscious ways as well as those we're aware of.
If we're honest we all find ourselves struggling in relationship at one or more points in life and counselling with a trained couples therapist can offer the support that may help facilitate lasting positive change.

Whatever has brought you to the point of seeking support  I know it can take courage and determination to be willing to invite a third person into the usually more private world of your relationship.

The initial session together allows you to get more of a sense of me and how I work, and me some sense of the issues that are bringing you to counselling. Then if it feels right to proceed, I tend to recommend weekly sessions, at least initially. Once the changes you are hoping to experience become more established, less frequent sessions may be indicated.

As we work together, the issues bringing each of you to therapy and what may lie beneath them will receive attention. I will support you both to look more deeply into the dynamics between you, at what you are each wanting, where things may have changed or gone awry, and how to move towards healthier and more enjoyable and fulfilling ways of relating

I may at times offer specific practices/exercises to support you in what you're wanting to learn, change or cultivate between you. We may also work with deepening understanding of the neurobiology of conflict, stress and connection.

Some common themes I work with:
  • Repair after conflict
  • Healthy boundaries, how to assert them and respect one anothers'.
  • Staying in connection with self and other in the face of strong difference.
  • Understanding and working with neurodivergence in relationship and families.
  • Recognising and taking responsibility for feelings and needs (and how to help each other with this).
  • Family dynamics/parenting challenges
  • Intensity vs true intimacy
  • Adjusting to transition/change - eg the birth of a child, children leaving home, job-loss/change, perimenopause/ menopause, ill-health, bereavement.

Some individual trauma work may be indicated within the couples work where appropriate and in some cases both of you coming for one or more individual sessions might be suggested.

Separation
It may be that you have reached a place of knowing that you need to separate and I do also work with couples who are needing support in this process.

Whether you are facing the ending of your relationship and are wanting to separate in as healthy a way as possible or are longing for change and greater satisfaction and shared enjoyment within it, I offer you my support. My experience is that seemingly entrenched patterns and insurmountable challenges in relationship can very often be helped by working together in couples counselling.

My couples work is grounded in 15 years of practice as a somatic psychotherapist and is strongly informed by neuroscience, systemic models of therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing (SE) as well as specialist couples training since 2019 (Juliet Grayson, David Slattery and Terry Real (Relational Life Therapy - RLT - ongoing).

I welcome you however you identify; whatever your lifestyle, sexual orientation, gender identification, ethnicity, cultural or social background.
I am in ongoing supervision and undertake continuing professional development.
